Highlights of the case:
Benign recurrent intrahepatic cholestasis (BRIC) and Progressive Familial
Intrahepatic Cholestasis (PFIC) are rare conditions of defective bile salt transport, each
with an estimated prevalence of 1/50,000-100,000.
People with this condition experience episodes of cholestasis, during which the
liver cells have a reduced ability to release bile. Episodes generally begin in the late
teens or early twenties and may be accompanied by jaundice, severe itchiness, a vague
feeling of discomfort (malaise), irritability, nausea, vomiting, and a lack of appetite.
One such case of a 32 year old male patient had approached GAMH, Mysuru with above
said complaints. BRIC self limiting disease and contemporary science manages it with
symptomatic treatment. Chikitsa Siddanta is framed focusing on doshagati to bring
shakhashrita doshas to the kosta by pitta vardhana, Kaphahara and vatanulomana
followed by shodhana(Virechana) for nirharana of utklista doshas.
